Mr. O'Halloran:

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what representations he has received from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry concerning methods of raising local authority revenue; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what representations he has received from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry concerning a local payroll tax; and if he will make a statement;

(3) what representations he has received from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry concerning local sales and motor vehicle fuel duties; and if he will make a statement;

(4) what representations he has received from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry concerning a local income tax; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. King:

The Department is considering a memorandum from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry about the volume of local taxation and methods of collecting local authority revenue, including possible alternatives to the present domestic rating system. The Government's consultation document on alternatives to domestic rating will be published shortly and the chamber's memorandum will be taken into account in this context together with any further comments that the chamber wishes to make.
