§ Mr. Dalyell asked the Secretary of State for Industry
- whether, following the abolition of the Waste
194 Management Advisory Council, he will make a statement on the policy of Her Majesty's Government towards the War on Waste Campaign; - whether he is taking steps to promote a policy of reclamation of resources at a national level;
- who, or which organisation, is responsible for waste management following the abolition of the Waste Management Advisory Council.
§ Mr. MacGregor:The Department of Industry and the Department of the Environment work closely together through their respective units with responsibility for reclamation and recycling, but the Government look principally to industry to take steps to ensure that waste materials are recycled where it is economic to do so. The Government remain committed to the objective of encouraging reclamation activities to develop to their optimum level, and there is direct and informal cooperation between central and local Government, industry and other interests concerned. For example, I was pleased to attend the recent launch of extended recycling activities by the metal can manufacturers.
