§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Wolverhampton, North-East on 16 July, if he is now able to list all those universities which had students graduating from them in technological subjects in 1980, with the numbers involved; and what information there is on what percentage of them in each case subsequently got jobs.

§ Mr. Waldegrave:The following table gives the total number of first and higher degree graduates in engineering and technology from each university in the United Kingdom during the academic year 1979–80. Information is collected in respect of the first known destination of these graduates between graduation and 31 December 1980. Not all graduates will seek employment directly, many will enter further education, while overseas graduates may return home. For all universities together, 64 per cent. of the first degree and 42 per cent. of the higher degree graduates were in employment by 31 December 1980. However, the corresponding percentages, excluding those entering further education or students from overseas returning home, were 92 per cent. and 97 per cent. respectively. It has not in the past been the policy of the University Grants Committee to disclose such information for individual universities. However, I am informed that its policy committee is to consider later this month whether to make this information available in the future. I shall write to the hon. Member in due course when its decision has been made.
