HC Deb 17 November 1981 vol 13 c84W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Prime Minister if she will take steps to appoint a separate Registrar General for Wales, as in Scotland.

The Prime Minister

No. In Scotland there is a separate body of law governing marriages and the registration of births and deaths, administered by a separate Registrar General. There is another body of law for both England and Wales. Legislation would be needed to establish a separate office of Registrar General for Wales and a separately administered local registration service. I cannot see that this would offer any practical advantage to the public in Wales.
