HC Deb 17 November 1981 vol 13 c129W
Mr. Whitehead

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what figures are available to him indicating the effect of the University Grants Committee's cuts on the study and research of applied science in the universities.

Mr. Waldegrave

The University Grants Committee's allocations of grant for 1981–82 and its provisional indications for later years provide for some growth in the number of home students in engineering and technology compared with the position in 1979–80. The committee's recommendations to individual universities do not propose specific allocations of grant between subject areas. The committee has taken into account the needs of research in its allocation of recurrent and equipment grant, but expects the overall reduction in resources to lead to some further concentration of research activity.
