HC Deb 12 November 1981 vol 12 c133W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Lord Privy Seal what recent representations he has made to the Chilean authorities concerning the case of William Beausire, a British passport-holder who disappeared in Chile in July 1975; if he will continue to press this with the Chilean authorities; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Luce

Since my right hon. and noble Friend raised this case with the Chilean Foreign Minister in September 1979, we have made regular representations to the Chilean Government, most recently on 2 June and 5 October. I regret to say that neither these representations, nor legal investigations have yet produced any result; but we shall continue to remind the Chilean Government of our concern and of their previous assurances of co-operation and to make it clear to them that we do not regard the case as closed. I intend to raise human rights questions, including the case of Mr. William Beausire, with the Chilean Minister of Labour and Social Security when he visits London next week.
