§ Mr. Cartwrightasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement about the present position of the new prison development proposed for the Woolwich Arsenal site.
§ Mr. MayhewThe London borough of Greenwich has formally objected to the proposal by the prison department of the Home Office to use some of the Ministry of Defence land at the Woolwich Arsenal east site for prison purposes. On the receipt of those objections, the prison department brought the matter to the attention of the Department of the Environment in accordance with paragraph 14 of D.O.E. circular 7/77. I understand that my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment has decided to hold a non-statutory local public inquiry as provided for in paragraph 15. It is expected that the arrangements for this inquiry will be announced shortly.
