§ Mr. Shersbyasked the Lord Privy Seal if he will make a statement on the latest position resulting from the initiative taken by the Government to persuade the Government of the United States of America to end the requirement for British subjects to obtain a visa in order to enter that country.
§ Mr. LuceRepresentations were made to the new United States Administration during the visit of my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister to Washington in February this year. In March the State Department introduced into its Appropriations Bill a clause which would allow the United States Secretary of State to waive tourist visas for nationals of some countries including the United Kingdom. I understand that this clause will now be considered separately by the Judiciary Sub-Committee, which has jurisdiction over immigration matters. Hearings have not yet taken place.
