§ Sir Ian GilmourInformal discussions of the aid claim began between officials in London on 15 May. The discussins did not relate to the sovereign base areas. The Government have official dealings only with the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, but informal contacts with representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community offer ample opportunity to exchange information and views. The Government have consistently maintained that any British assistance to Cyprus should benefit both communities.
