asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the progress of the job release scheme.

Since the job release scheme was introduced in January 1977, 142,500 people have joined the scheme. At the end of February 1981, 59,500 people were being supported by the schemes.

As I announced in the House on 21 November 1980 the job release schemes will be continued for a further year on the present basis.
