HC Deb 29 June 1981 vol 7 cc306-7W
Mr. Ronald W. Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Transport for how many years the lorry inspectorate in his Department has been in existence; on how many occasions it has undertaken inspections of lorries in Graham Road, Hackney and New North Road, Shoreditch; and on what date the last inspection was carried out.

Mr. Fowler

Powers to inspect heavy goods vehicles were originally provided in the Road and Rail Traffic Act 1933. Roadside spot checks are undertaken in close co-operation with the police and care is taken to ensure that the check does not create a traffic hazard. The Department's examiners have not carried out spot checks in the roads mentioned.
