HC Deb 19 June 1981 vol 6 c453W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Prime Minister, further to her reply of 12 June to the hon. Member for Caernarvon, concerning the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Wales for encouraging support of the Welsh language, if she will clarify whether this responsibility extends in any way to encouraging the use and development of the Welsh language within university education.

The Prime Minister

University education is the responsibility of my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales, in exercise of the powers of section 21 of the Education Act 1980, has offered grants totalling about £40,000 to various departments of the University of Wales for projects to be undertaken during 1981–82 designed to encourage the use of the Welsh language.
