asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many babies were born to mothers in prison in the last available figures.

Mr. Mayhew

Thirty seven in the 12 months ending 31 May 1981. In addition, 26 babies were born to borstal trainees and 11 to women in custody awaiting trial or sentence.
