asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will establish flexible guidelines for the collection of value added tax for small manufacturing companies following upon any conclusion of the Civil Service industrial dispute.

Mr. Peter Rees

No. Once the dispute is over, it would be inappropriate either to interfere with the normal machinery of tax collection or to favour any particular class of trader from whom we are collecting tax.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he anticipates any problems in the collection of arrears of value added tax during the current Civil Service industrial dispute.

Collection of some arrears of VAT will have to await the end of the strike by staff at the VAT computer centre.
