HC Deb 15 June 1981 vol 6 c292W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if, in view of the recommendations of the second report of the Radioactive Waste Management Committee, he will now abandon the proposed research programme for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste in geological formations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. King

No. Although the radioactive waste management advisory committee has recommended in its second annual report that containment in an engineered storage system might be the best way to deal with solidified high-level radioactive waste for 50 years or longer, it has also reaffirmed the need for research on all the ultimate disposal routes currently under investigation.
