Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion as a percentage and absolute figure of National Health Service expenditure in the years 1970 to 1981 on the most recent date available was spent on the following (a) geriatric services, (b) community services, (c) services for the mentally handicapped, (d) services for the mentally ill, (e) acute hospital services and (f) maternity services.

The table below sets out, at 1980 survey prices, net current expenditure on the National Health Service between 1975–76 and 1979–80 and the estimated expenditure on various specific client group services over this period. Comparable figures prior to 1975–76 are not available because of NHS reorganisation.

The expenditure figures for particular services are derived using the methodology developed for the Department's programme budget as a basis for forward
