§ Mr. Iain Millsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will consider including in the British Broadcasting Corporation's charter a requirement to provide a traffic information system such as Carfax.
§ Mr. MayhewBoth the Government and the BBC are considering urgently ways in which a Carfax service might be established. There is nothing in the existing BBC charter or licence and agreement—or in the new charter for which we are applying or the licence and agreement which the House approved on 21 May—which would prevent the BBC from providing this service. My right hon. Friend does not consider that it would be appropriate, or consistent with the responsibilities of the board of governors of the corporation, to require it to provide within the Home services a particular broadcasting service, such as a traffic information service.
