asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he intends to publish a Green Paper or discussion document on privacy and data protection before legislation is introduced.

My right hon. Friend announced on 19 March the Government's proposals for safeguarding personal information handled automatically. We shall consult outside bodies, where necessary, in working out details of the legislation, but have not yet decided on the best way of carrying out this consultation.
