asked the Secretary of State for the Environment which members of water authorities receive salaries; and if he will consider allowing payments to be made to all committee chairmen of such authorities.

Water authority chairmen and chairmen of their regional and local land drainage committees receive a salary.

We do not intend to amend the Water Act 1973 to enable other committee chairmen to be paid.
