§ Rev. Ian Paisleyasked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the future of the Kilroot power station.
§ Mr. Adam Butler[pursuant to his reply, 30 July 1981]: As my right hon. Friend announced on 8 May, no further work will be done on the second phase of Kilroot power station. One of the two generating sets in the first phase has been completed and brought into use; construction of the second set is continuing with a view to its commissioning by early 1982. The Northern Ireland Electricity Service is now considering the most effective use of this and other generating capacity within Northern Ireland to meet projected demand and is also considering on a longer time scale the possibility of conversion to coal-firing. It is unlikely that a decision on this matter will be taken for some time yet.—[Vol. 4, c. 145.].
