asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he is satisfied that, following the high investment in modem competitive capacity, the British coal industry will be able to sell coal at a price competitive in the European market.

It is clear that investment in modern capacity, by increasing the coal industry's productivity and reducing costs, can improve the competitive position of United Kingdom coal at home and abroad. I naturally hope that the board will make every effort to reap the greatest possible benefits from the very substantial investment in the industry in recent years.
