Mr. Phillip Whitehead

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what was the total manpower of the United Kingdom central Government in total numbers and not in full-time equivalents, including all services administered by Government departments, for each year from 1952 to 1980.

1952 to 1958 — Department of Employment's British Labour Statistics Historical Abstract 1968.

1959 to 1973—Economic Trends, February 1976. Article on employment, table 1.

1974 to 1980—Economic Trends, November 1980. Article on employment, table 1.

The figures up to 1956 refer to Great Britain; United Kingdom figures for this period are not available.
