§ Mr. Christopher Priceasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list in the Official Report the number of long term prisoners currently waiting for a location at Wandsworth prison; and how many of them are accorded educational facilities.
§ Mr. MayhewOn 14 July 1981, 122 long term prisoners were in Wandsworth Prison for assessment, or awaiting transfer to a training prison after assessment. None of them had access to educational facilities. These, because of limited resources, have to be devoted to those who serve their sentences in Wandsworth.

§ Mr. MayhewLong term prisoners spend about four months in Wandsworth prison after sentence undergoing assessment before allocation to a training prison. Thereafter transfer may take place within a few days or may be delayed for some time depending upon the vacancies available. Apart from those held back for personal reasons the longest recorded stay is about 17 months.
