HL Deb 14 July 1981 vol 422 c1230WA
Lord Houghton of Sowerby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps are taken to ensure compliance with the conditions of exemption grants by Section 36 of the Slaughterhouses Act 1974 in the case of ritually slaughtered meat: (i) supplied to purchasers for general sale, for restaurants, hotels and the meat-processing industry; and (ii) exported to other countries.

Earl Ferrers

Local authorities who are responsible for enforcing this legislation take whatever steps they consider necessary to ensure compliance. Veterinary officers of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food provide advice to local authorities in appropriate cases. The provision, which allows slaughtering by the Jewish or Moslem method, applies to any slaughter of animals for the food of Jews or Moslems provided that the conditions prescribed in the Act are met.

House adjourned at eleven o'clock.
