HL Deb 07 July 1981 vol 422 c688WA
Lord Chitnis

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they had taken into account the situation of the Akawayo Indians, particularly as laid out in the document published by Survival International, The Damned; the plight of the Akawayo Indians of Guyana by G. Bennet et al, when they instructed our director at the World Bank to support the Upper Mazaruni Hydro-electric Project in Guyana in October 1980, and whether any British technical assistance has since been directly or indirectly lent to the feasibility study.

Lord Carrington

The Government are aware from the Survival International document of the potential impact of the Upper Mazaruni hydro-electric project on the present inhabitants of the project site. The feasibility studies approved by the World Bank Board in 1980 will be taking account of this and the findings will be reviewed by the board before any decision is taken to finance the project. There is no British technical assistance involvement in the study.

House adjourned at eleven minutes before eleven o'clock.
