HC Deb 01 July 1981 vol 7 c390W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications to join the Metropolitan Police were received in each of the last five years from members of ethnic minorities; and what proportion of these was accepted.

Mr. Mayhew

It is not possible at the application stage to distinguish applicants from the ethnic minorities. In each of the last five years the number of successful applicants from the ethnic minorities and the number who actually became recruits were as follows:

Recruitment to the Metropolitan Police from the ethnic minorities
Year Successful applicants Recruits
1976 43 23
1977 27 16
1978 19 9
1979 20 14
1980 33 22
