§ Dr. Roger Thomas
asked the Secretary of State for Wales, in view of expressions of concern by the Farmers Union of Wales that high standards of animal health are difficult to maintain because of modern communications systems with Europe, what efforts are being made to 437W counter sheep scab, foot and mouth disease, warble fly, hydatid disease and bovine tuberculosis and to prevent them from assuming worrying proportions.
§ Mr. Nicholas Edwards
Animals and animal products are required to be licensed for import into Great Britain and veterinary certification of freedom from disease is required.
The import licensing system, together with the control and eradication measures operating within Great Britain, have ensured that the number of outbreaks of disease in recent years have been contained at a low level.
