HC Deb 26 January 1981 vol 997 c332W
Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary for Transport if he will explain his policy for energy conservation in transport matters.

Mr. Fowler

My policy is to encourage cost-effective energy conservation measures in transport, especially those which reduce dependence on oil while retaining flexibility in the transport system and preserving personal mobility. For details of the measures which I have already taken, I refer my hon. Friend to the reply which I gave to the hon. Member for Swansea, East (Mr. Anderson) on 10 December 1980. My Department is also encouraging research and development Of electric vehicles and examining prospects for the alternative fuels for transport that will probably le needed in the next century.
