Mr. Brittan

I have been asked to reply.

There has been a reduction in the preconditions required of firms wishing to tender for Government construction contracts. I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given by my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for the Environment to the hon. Member for Brigg and Scunthorpe (Mr. Brown) on 13 November 1980—[Vol. 991, c. 465].

No new preconditions have been introduced since May 1979. However, as a consequence of the Fair Employment (Northern Ireland) Act 1976, consideration is being given to a scheme whereby firms in Northern Ireland wishing to tender for Government contracts would be required to hold an equal opportunity certificate issued by the Fair Employment Agency, Northern Ireland.
