HC Deb 26 January 1981 vol 997 cc310-1W
Mr. Peter Robinson

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what Government expenditure has been made on Stranmillis college of education, St. Mary's college of education and St. Joseph's college of education, respectively, in each of the last four years.

Mr. John Patten

The table below shows expenditure in the four financial years 1976–77 to 1979–80:

(Thousands of pounds)
1976–77 1977–78 1978–79 1979–80
Recurrent expenditure
Stranmillis 1,841 1,633 2,128 2,122
St. Mary's 677 732 880 826
St. Joseph's 634 695 802 861
Capital expenditure
Stranmillis 45
St. Mary's 185 105 16 45
St. Joseph's 8 1 5

Note 1: Recurrent expenditure comprises the grants and payments by the Department on the approved net expenditure of the colleges and the tuition fees paid to the colleges in respect of students holding teacher training scholarships. The figures are the sums actually paid in the financial year concerned and in each case cover payments related to 2 academic years.

Note 2: In 1977–78 the Department revised the timing of its issue of tuition fees and this causes some distortion in the pattern of expenditure.

Note 3: The figures given exclude payments made in respect of student union fees.
