§ Mr. Nicholas Wintertonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many staff in his Department have special responsibilities for dealing with EEC matters; and what is the cost to public funds of employing them.
§ Mr. YoungerAt 1 January 1981, there were 29 staff in my Department engaged purely on European Community business. The annual cost of their salaries and employer's national insurance contributions, at current prices, is £183,000.
In addition, a number of my staff have some involvement, to varying degrees short of full-time responsibility, in European Community matters. Precise details of the numbers of staff, the proportion of their time spent on such matters and the cost of that time could be provided only at excessive cost.
