asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many pupils in maintained primary and secondary schools currently receive free school meals; and what is the total number of school meals.

My right hon. and learned Friend hopes to announce shortly the results of the autumn school meals census. The form of school meals service to be provided and the charging policy are now essentially matters for local decision.
