§ Mr. MayhewPrisons and borstals in England and Wales, with details of accommodation, are listed in appendix 3 to the prison department annual report for 1979 (Cmnd. 7965). Slopping out is a feature in most closed prisons and borstals and over 20,000 cells do not contain sanitary facilities although new cellular prisons have flush toilets in cells. More precise details are not available centrally.
§ Mr. Dubsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in which prisons and borstals prisoners may receive newspapers brought in for them by visitors.
§ Mr. MayhewVisitors are not allowed to take in newspapers for prisoners. A prisoner may, however, receive newspapers sent direct from publishers or newsagents either at the order of a relative or friend or at his own expense.
