asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many civil servants are employed (a) in his Department and (b) in the Manpower Services Commission; and what was the figure 12 months ago.

The numbers of permanent staff employed by my Department and by the Manpower Services Commission at 1 January 1981 and 1 January 1980 were as follows:
