HC Deb 04 February 1981 vol 998 cc108-9W
Mr. Freeson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the latest figures for unemployment and job vacancies for the area covering the London borough of Brent; and what were the equivalent figures for 1979.

Mr. Peter Morrison

At 15 January 1981, the provisional number of people registered as unemployed in the area covered by the Kilburn, Willesden and Wembley employment offices, which closely corresponds to the London borough of Brent, was 8,624. The corresponding figure at 11 January 1979 was 5,101.

At 9 January 1981, the numbers of notified vacancies remaining unfilled at employment offices and careers offices in the area were 579 and 24, respectively. The corresponding figures at 5 January 1979 were 2,003 and 144. Vacancies notified to employment offices are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication the figures for employment offices and careers offices should not be added together.
