This is the only source to yield figures of directly employed NHS staff in all parts of the United Kingdom for the years in question, although a comparison of the 1979 and 1980 figures with those for earlier years is not valid because of the transfer of staff from local government in the 1974 reorganisation of the NHS. These figures include both part-time and full-time staff and cannot be translated into whole-time equivalents.
