§ Mr. Cormackasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he is now in a position to announce the grants to arts bodies for 1982.
§ Mr. ChannonYes. I am glad that I am now able, earlier than in any recent year, to announce details of proposed arts and libraries expenditure for 1982–83. The Government's expenditure plans for arts and libraries are intended to enable the programme to go on without fundamental change. Some economies will continue to be necessary in this as in all other fields, but I believe that the increased allocations I am proposing are fair and reasonable. Estimates to be submitted in due course for parliamentary approval will provide for the grant to the Arts Council of Great Britain to be increased to £86 million, and for increased provision for the British Library, the national museums and galleries and the other institutions for which I am responsible. Provision will be made in the usual way in the Estimates for expenditure by the Property Services Agency on the buildings of the national museums and galleries, and also for the first year's work on the new Euston Road building of the British Library. Details of what I propose are as follows:
