§ Mr. Marlowasked the Prime Minister whether she will arrange for the May Day public holiday to be replaced by a public holiday on St. George's Day in England in future years.
§ The Prime MinisterUnder the existing arrangements, the first Monday in May is a bank holiday. We have considered the possibility of changing the date of that holiday, but have decided not to do so. There would be a number of disadvantages in a move to St. George' Day, not least its proximity to Easter: there will be six years between now and the end of the century when there will be less than a week between Easter and St. George's Day.
