§ Mr. Donald Stewartasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if the statement on his Department's leaflet (1979), H.M.S.O. Dd0000438) that 'Stonehenge is the most important and impressive monument in Britain with international renown' is the considered policy of his Department.
§ Mr. MonroNo: the statement was not intended to be a considered archaeological appraisal. It was included in a leaflet which explained the need to stop visitors walking among the stones thereby damaging this monument. The restriction has now become an established practice and the leaflet is being withdrawn.
