§ Mr. Proctorasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will order an inquiry as to how medical waste came to be washed ashore at Pitsea, Basildon, Essex.
§ Mr. Giles ShawThe local authorities concerned are currently investigating the recent incidents of medical waste being washed ashore at Canvey Island. I am concerned at these matters and I have ensured that my Department will discuss the local authorities' findings with them. I therefore think no further inquiry is necessary. My hon. Friend may like to know that an interdepartmental working party is examining safe methods of dealing with medical waste with a view to drawing up a code of practice for its handling and disposal.
