§ Mr. Iain Millsasked the Secretary of State for Transport if there are any plans to change the present system of numbering British roads and motorways; and if so, what would be the cost of conversion.
§ Mr. Fowler[pursuant to his reply, 6 April 1981, c. 211]: I have no proposals whatever to change our present route numbering system.
The previous Administration agreed to a United Nations Economic Commission for Europe proposal on the signing of routes throughout Europe of international importance. These routes were to be given a number and known as "E" routes. It was proposed that there would be 353W 12 such routes in the United Kingdom covering existing motorway and trunk roads. The "E" number would have been additional to existing road signs alongside the present route designation.
354WThe Government have not ratified the agreement and I have no immediate plans to do so.
