HC Deb 09 April 1981 vol 2 c316W
Mr. David Young

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the latest figures on all payments, paid or proposed, for the purpose of nuclear civil defence, and the recipients of such payments.

Mr. Mayhew

The purpose of civil defence is to protect the civilian population and enhance its prospects of surviving hostile attack. Measures specifically for protection against nuclear attack are not separately indentified.

Estimated expenditure by the Government on civil defence in the United Kingdom for 1980–81 was approximately £21.6 million. Details of estimated expenditure for 1981–82 are shown in the published Supply Estimates.
