asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many applications for (a) registration and (b) naturalisation as a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies were received in January and in February 1981, how many applications were outstanding on 28th February 1981, and how many staff were in post at the beginning of February and March.

The information is as follows:

Number of applications received: January 1981 February 1981
For registration 5,391 5,438
For naturalisation 962 903

On 28th February 1981, 49,485 applications for registration and 10,871 applications for naturalisation were outstanding. On 1st February 1981, and 1st March 1981, the number of staff in post was 213 and 215 respectively.

Lord Belstead

In 1980 23,147 persons, including minors, were registered in the United Kingdom as citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies, and 5,669 adults were granted naturalisation. In January 1981 the figures were 1,861 and 595 respectively, and in February 1981, 1,914 and 456.
