asked the Minister of Transport what programmes of research relating to the human tolerance to physical constraints occasioned by road accidents has been initiated by the European Economic Community what expenditure has been made and authorised for each year of the programme; and what is its purpose.

Mr. Fowler

The programmes initiated by the European Community include an overview of road accidents in member States; investigation of the causes of injury to vehicle occupants in front and side impact collisions; the development of suitable dummies for vehicle testing; and work on injuries caused to pedestrians by cars. The purpose of the research is to identify ways in which Community rules on vehicle safety can be improved.
