HC Deb 27 October 1980 vol 991 cc146-55W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is his latest estimate of the number of people who have been out of work for more than (a) six months and (b) 12 months, by region and by sex.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c. 401–2]: Following is the information at 10 July for each standard region of Great Britain and for Northern Ireland:

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply. 8 August 1980, c. 403]: The following table gives for July each year from 1975 the numbers registered as unemployed in each employment office area in the West Midlands region. It also gives the percentage rates of unemployment in travel-to-work area and in employment offices areas outside the travel-to-work areas.

Notes:
1 The figures for July 1975 include adult students not present in those for later years.
2 Because of a change in the school-leaving regulations the July figures for 1976 and later years include considerable numbers of school leavers not present in the figures for July 1975.
3 The July 1980 figures are not strictly comparable with those for earlier years because of the introduction, in September 1979, of fortnightly attendance and payment of benefit. Estimates for local areas are not available but for the country as a whole the monthly unemployment figures are about 20,000, or 1½ per cent. higher than under weekly attendance.

Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many adults and young people have been unemployed for (a) one year and (b) two years in (i) Gosport and (ii) the United Kingdom as

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c. 402]: Following is the information at 10 July for Scotland. Wales and the standard regions of England.

Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the latest figures for the number of (a) lone parents, (b) heads of two-parent families and (c) married women in full-time employment, self-employed and unemployed.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c. 402]: (a) It is estimated that in 1978, the latest year for which estimates have been made, there were approximately 825,000 lone-parent families in Great Britain. Of these, it is further estimated that about a quarter of a million worked full-time and about 160,000 part-time. Estimates of the numbers who were self-employed and unemployed are not readily available.

(b) It is estimated that in 1977 there were 6.4 million two-parent families in Great Britain. Amout 5.3 million family heads were estimated to be full-time employees and about 0.7 million self-employed. Reliable estimates of the numbers unemployed and in part-time employment cannot be made.

(c) Results from the European Community labour force survey indicate that in 1977 there were about 13.7 million married females, 6.5 million of whom were in employment. Of these, the survey shows 2.8 million were full-time employees, 3.3 million part-time employees, 0 .3 million were self-employed and nearly half a million stated that they were out of employment and looking for work, whether or not they were registered for employment with the employment services.

NOTE. For the purpose of this question, families with a lone parent or two parents are defined as those having a dependent child or children aged either under 16 or 16 to 19 but undergoing full-time education.
