HC Deb 27 October 1980 vol 991 cc175-6W
Mr. Newens

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list for the year ended 31 March 1978 the number of parental rights resolutions passed under each of the subsections (1) (a) to (d) of section 57 of the Children Act 1975 including details of the number passed under paragraphs (b) i) to (v).

Sir George Young:

I regret that information cannot be provided in the exact form requested. We can only provide information relating to children who came into care during the year ending 31 March 1978 and were still in care on that date. In respect of these children, resolutions were passed on the following grounds in the year ending 31 March 1978:

Children Act 1948, Section 2 (as introduced by section 57 Children Act 1975)
Subsection (1)(a) 71
(1)(6)(i) 44
(b)(ii) 18
(b)(iii) 70
(b)(iv) 174
(b)(v) 294
(1)(c) 4
Not specified 19

Mrs. Chalker:

The following table shows the numbers involved. Information on the average payment in each category is not available, but the average payment of supplementary benefit to two-parent families is £35.46 weekly. The numbers include 155,000 two-parent family householders with children under 16, and the average amount included in their benefit assessment towards housing costs is £9.40 weekly.

We do not have information about resolutions passed during the year in respect of children who were in care before the year began or who left care during the year.
