asked the Secretary of State for Energy how much has been spent in Great Britain over the past five years on research and development of alternative sources of energy.

Mr. John Moore:

My Department has spent some £11 million over the financial years ending in 1976–1980 inclusive. Over the same period, the total public sector expenditure was about £40 million. Information on the private sector expenditure in this field is not available.
