asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the total telephone bill for his Department during the last financial year for which figures are available.

The total telephone bill for all Ministry of Defence calls, home and overseas, for the financial year 1979 –80, including VAT, was approximately £36,300,000; the attention of all staff has recently been drawn to this expenditure, and to ways of making economies.
