HC Deb 13 November 1980 vol 992 cc456-7W
Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Minister of Transport if he will institute proceedings against Autocars Julia of Barcelona, following irregularities by that company in the use of log books and application of driving hours regulations.

Mr. Fowler

So far as operations of Autocar Julia in this country are concerned, I am not at present aware of any offence that would justify the institution of proceedings.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Minister of Transport whether his Department has issued any PSV71 notices against passenger vehicles operated by Autocars Julia of Barcelona.

Mr. Fowler

No.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Minister of Transport if he will suspend the vehicle operators' licence of Autocars Julia pending a British inquiry into the company's commercial operations as they affect the United Kingdom.

Mr. Fowler

The French authorities are to hold a judicial inquiry into the recent accident and I shall study their report carefully. In the meantime, I do not think a separate British inquiry is needed. I have now received assurances from Autocars Julia that its coaches on the Barcelona-London service will be operated in accordance with the international rules governing drivers' hours and records.

My Department will keep in close touch with the Spanish authorities so that we can both ensure these undertakings are adhered to.
