HC Deb 21 May 1980 vol 985 c209W
61. Mr. Chapman

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he has made any forecast of the effects on the numbers of non-industrial civil servants required in Government Departments as a result of the introduction of the microchip, word processors and other similar technology.

Mr. Channon

Technology is an important aid to improving economy, efficiency and effectiveness. It is not possible at this stage, however, to make realistic estimates of the effects on job levels of new office technology. These should become clearer as the new equipment is tried out over a number of years.
